More about this Citizen Automatic Gold Dial

A vintage Citizen automatic day-date

Citizen, founded in 1930, was Japan's other great watchmaker alongside Seiko. This is one of its vintage automatic day-date watches: a self-winding movement showing the day and date together at 3 o'clock.

Most vintage Citizen automatics of the late 1970s and 1980s run the 8200 caliber, a robust 21-jewel movement at 21,600 vph with Parashock shock protection and about 45 hours of power reserve. It was Citizen's everyday automatic and the direct rival to the Seiko 5, most famously in the Eagle 7 line. We read the exact caliber and reference from the caseback in store.

Caliber and dating

Vintage Citizens are dated from the caseback markings and serial. We read the caseback in person, so we tell you the exact reference and approximate build date rather than guess.

The Citizen story behind this watch

Japan's other automatic

Citizen built its name, like Seiko, on tough and affordable automatics. Its 8200 day-date became one of the most widely produced Japanese movements and lives on today as the Miyota 8205.

Value comes down to originality and condition: a clean, original dial and a smoothly running movement matter most.

Condition & authenticity

Honest vintage, openly described

  • Honest vintage wear: the case and dial carry age. Citizen made these in large numbers, so condition and originality drive value.
  • We check in store that the movement runs and self-winds and the day-date changes correctly, and that the dial, hands and chapter ring are original.
  • The bracelet may be a later replacement. The caseback is read in person, so we give you the exact caliber, reference and build date rather than guess.
  • Water resistance on a watch this age is historical labelling only.
