More about this HMT Para Shock

The movement: the HMT 0231 hand-wound

The dial reads Para Shock 17 Jewels with 0231 printed near 6 o'clock, which places this watch in HMT's 0231 hand-wound family, documented as a 17-jewel manual calibre derived from the Citizen 0201. It runs at 18,000 A/h with direct centre seconds, the simple, serviceable architecture that made HMT mechanicals so durable.

Para Shock is the Citizen-derived Parashock system, a shock setting for the balance. It was HMT's promise that this was a practical machine meant to survive daily life, not a fragile ornament. We open the watch and confirm the calibre family with you before any sale.

A blue dial with real character

The deep blue dial is the heart of this watch. Vintage blue dials shift with the light, from navy to cobalt to almost black, and HMT used blue across several of its best-loved references. Combined with the cushion case and the gold-tone arrow hands, it gives this piece a strong, instantly recognisable presence.

At about 35 to 36 mm the watch wears as a compact period dress piece. It is a hand-wound watch you wind each morning and live with, marks and all, an honest and affordable way into vintage HMT.

The HMT story behind this watch

An everyday object from India's industrial age

HMT began in 1953 as Hindustan Machine Tools, a Government of India enterprise. In 1961 it set up its watch unit in Bangalore with Citizen Watch Co. of Japan, and the first batch of hand-wound wristwatches was released by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. HMT was India's first wristwatch manufacturer, part of the country's post-independence drive for industrial self-reliance.

The Para Shock 17 Jewels belongs to HMT's classic hand-wound tradition, built on the long-lived 0231 movement. HMT grew rapidly, set up Watch Factory II in 1972 and its own watch-case facility in 1983, and by its own account served more than 100 million customers. An HMT on the wrist signalled middle-class pride in something made at home.

That chapter is now closed. HMT's watch manufacturing wound down in the mid-2010s, with the heritage kept alive through its Auxiliary Business Division and the HMT Heritage Centre in Bengaluru. Every original mechanical HMT is a piece from a finished story.

A watch that was clearly worn

This is not a safe-queen. The crystal is scratched, the case carries real wear and the dial has softened with age. For many HMT enthusiasts that lived-in honesty is the appeal: it is a watch that measured office shifts, train platforms and ordinary mornings rather than sitting in a drawer.

The HMT market is also full of restored, repainted and modified pieces. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise, which is why we describe this one as a genuine HMT mechanical with honest wear and some cosmetic parts that may have changed over the years.

It looks used because it was used: a small mechanical machine that still carries the memory of a country learning to make its own time.

Condition & authenticity

Honest vintage, openly described

  • This is an honest, well-worn vintage HMT. The crystal shows heavy scratching, the steel case has visible wear, and the blue dial printing has faded in places. It reads as a watch that lived on a wrist for decades.
  • We will be straight about originality. The bright gold-tone arrow hands are atypical for many period HMT dress dials, the dial is worn, and the expandable bracelet looks like a later replacement. Some cosmetic parts may have been refreshed or swapped over the years.
  • The caseback is genuine HMT language: all stainless steel, shock proof and water resistant, made in India, stamped HMT 023963. The movement family and caseback identity read as authentic HMT, while the external cosmetics are best treated as honest and period, not certified original.
  • Vintage HMT is widely modded and redialed, so we never claim a precise factory-original spec from the outside alone. We go through the caseback markings and the movement with you in store, and water resistance on a watch this age is historical labelling only, not a present-day rating.
