More about this Seiko 5 Silver Day-Date

What a Seiko 5 is

Seiko launched the Seiko 5 in 1963 as a tough, affordable automatic for everyday wear. The 5 stands for five guaranteed attributes: an automatic movement, a day-date displayed together at 3 o'clock, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o'clock, and a durable case and bracelet.

It became one of the most successful watch lines in history and is the usual entry point into vintage Seiko: honest, reliable and still very wearable.

Caliber and dating

Vintage Seiko 5s are dated from the caseback: a caliber-case code (such as 7009-3170) and a six-digit serial whose first digits give the year and month. The key vintage calibers are the 6119 (late 1960s-1970s), the 7009 and 6309 (late 1970s-1980s) and the 7S26 (1990s on). We read the exact caliber and build date from this watch's caseback in store.

The Seiko story behind this watch

Japan's everyday automatic

Seiko built the Seiko 5 to be tough, accurate and affordable, and made it in enormous numbers from 1963 onward. It put a reliable automatic on millions of wrists worldwide and remains the most popular way into vintage Seiko collecting.

Value comes down to originality and condition: a clean, original dial and a smoothly running movement matter more than anything.

Condition & authenticity

Honest vintage, openly described

  • Honest vintage wear: the case and dial carry age. Seiko 5s were made in huge numbers, so condition and originality drive value.
  • We check in store that the movement runs and self-winds, the day-date changes correctly, and the dial, hands and chapter ring are original (redials and swapped dials exist on these).
  • The bracelet may be a later replacement. The caseback is worn, so we read the caliber-case code and serial in person and tell you the exact reference and build date rather than guess.
  • Water resistance on a watch this age is historical labelling only.
