More about this HMT Hand-Wound (Black Dial)
The movement: HMT Para Shock hand-wound
The dial reads Para Shock 17 Jewels, which places it in HMT's 0231 hand-wound family: a 17-jewel manual movement, a licensed copy of the Citizen 0201 / 1802, running at 18,000 A/h with direct centre seconds and about 38 hours of power reserve when freshly serviced.
Why we do not name the model
HMT printed each model name in cursive script on the dial. On this watch that signature has worn away and is no longer legible, so we will not guess a name and risk being wrong. We list it honestly as a vintage HMT hand-wound and confirm the exact model with you in store from the caseback and any clearer markings.
The HMT story behind this watch
An everyday object from India's industrial age
HMT, originally Hindustan Machine Tools, was incorporated in 1953 and set up its Bangalore watch unit with Citizen Watch Co. of Japan in 1961, becoming India's first wristwatch manufacturer; the first batch was released by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
HMT made mechanical watches until 2016 and served, by its own account, over 100 million customers.

The dial name has worn away, so we list it honestly: a vintage HMT hand-wound, exact model confirmed in store.
Condition & authenticity
Honest vintage, openly described
- Honest, heavy vintage wear: the dial is scuffed and the printed model name has worn away, the crystal is marked and the cushion case edges are soft.
- Because the dial signature is not legible, we present this as a vintage HMT hand-wound and confirm the exact model in store rather than guess.
- The expandable steel bracelet may be a later replacement, and the movement has not been opened, so the calibre is an evidence-based reading from the Para Shock dial marking rather than a certified fact.
- Vintage HMT is widely redialed, so we do not claim total originality from the outside. Water resistance on a watch this age is not to be relied upon.
